How good is Vodafone's mobile coverage?

Vodafone has its own network and offers 2G, 3G, 4G and, more recently, 5G coverage.

In our latest analysis of phone coverage, performed in conjunction with coverage experts RootMetrics, we found that Vodafone came second in our rankings of overall performance and network speeds.

Read the full analysis in our guide, Which mobile phone network has the best coverage?.

You can check coverage where you live by using our free interactive mobile network coverage map. Simply enter your postcode into the map and it will tell you how good Vodafone's signal is in your area, as well as comparing it with the other providers.

Vodafone also offers a 30-day guarantee, allowing new customers 30 days to try out their new phones and to return them if they're unhappy with the device or the coverage they get. That's far in excess of the 14 days offered by most providers.

Vodafone mobile deals and incentives

Vodafone has a number of different pay-monthly deals.

Red Plans are the most affordable pay-monthly option. They offer unlimited texts plus a choice of data (1GB to 5GB).

Red Entertainment Bundles include 4G data allowances (5GB to 20GB) plus access to one of four entertainment packs, with a choice of Amazon Prime Video, Spotify Premium, Sky Sports Mobile TV or Now TV.

More recently, Vodafone has been offering three unlimited plans:

  • Unlimited Lite is the cheapest plan and has a maximum download speed of 2Mbps.
  • Unlimited is the mid-tier option and has a maximum download speed of 10Mbps.
  • Unlimited Max is the most expensive option and has no speed restrictions in place.

Vodafone has two pay-as-you-go (PAYG) offerings:

  • Pay as you go 1, which gives you unlimited free minutes and texts and 500MB for any day where you spend £1, although allowances don't carry over to the next day.
  • Big Value Bundles, which gives you a packaged allowance of data, minutes and texts when you top up a certain amount. The bundles, unlike the PAYG1 tariff, do carry over, assuming you have a recurring tariff.

Vodafone's main incentive is its VeryMe Rewards loyalty scheme, which gives offers and rewards, from high street discounts to discounted cinema tickets.

Vodafone stores

Vodafone is one of the biggest phone providers and has approximately 500 shops in the UK, meaning that it's pretty easy to get help.

You can check where your nearest branch is by using the Vodafone store finder or by calling Vodafone customer service on 191 (from an Vodafone mobile) or 03333 040191.

Complaints about Vodafone

Telecoms regulator Ofcom regularly publishes information on the number of complaints it gets about the main mobile providers.

In its latest report, covering the third quarter of 2019 (January to March), Vodafone was the joint most-complained-about pay-monthly mobile provider, alongside Virgin Mobile. In this period it generated seven complaints per 100,000 customers, almost double the industry average (four per 100,000 customers). In comparison, Tesco Mobile generated the lowest rate of complaints, with one per 100,000 customers.

Ofcom also takes action against companies that break regulatory rules, and in October 2016 it fined Vodafone £4.6m. The fine was imposed because Vodafone failed to add the correct amount of credit to the accounts of thousands of PAYG customers who had topped up their phones, and it also breached Ofcom’s rules on handling customer complaints.
